The switch<\/code> statement in PHP is used to execute different blocks of code based on the value of an expression. This makes it an efficient alternative to using multiple if...else<\/code> statements, especially when comparing one expression against multiple cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Syntax<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
switch (expression) {\n  case label1:\n    \/\/ Code block\n    break;\n  case label2:\n    \/\/ Code block\n    break;\n  case label3:\n    \/\/ Code block\n    break;\n  default:\n    \/\/ Code block\n}<\/pre><\/div>\n\n\n\n

How It Works<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
    \n
  1. The expression is evaluated once.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Its value is compared with each case<\/code> label.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. If a match is found, the corresponding block of code is executed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. The break<\/code> keyword exits the switch<\/code> block to prevent the execution of the next cases.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. If no match is found, the default<\/code> block runs, if specified.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
    Example: Choosing a Motorcycle Brand<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
    Here’s an example where a user specifies their preferred motorcycle brand. The program outputs a message based on the choice:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The break Keyword<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
    The break<\/code> keyword stops further case evaluations once a match is found. Without it, subsequent case blocks are executed even if they don’t match the expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
    Example: Omitting break<\/code><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
    If we remove the break<\/code> in one of the cases, here\u2019s what happens:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Here, if the preferredBrand<\/code> is “Kawasaki”, both the “Kawasaki” and “Ducati” blocks will execute, producing unintended behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
    The default Keyword<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
    The default<\/code> block executes when no case<\/code> matches the expression. While it’s often the last block, it can be placed elsewhere (not recommended) but must include a break<\/code> to avoid unintended results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
