In Java, every application begins with a class name, and that class must match the filename.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Let’s create our first Java file called WelcomeApp.java<\/code>, which can be done in any text editor (like Notepad).<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe file should contain a “Hello, Java Universe!” message, which is written with the following code:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
WelcomeApp.java\n\npublic class WelcomeApp {\n public static void main(String[] args) {\n System.out.println("Hello, Java Universe!");\n }\n}<\/pre><\/div>\n\n\n\nDon’t worry if you don’t understand the code above – we will discuss it in detail in later chapters. \n- Save the Code<\/strong>: Save the code in Notepad as
WelcomeApp.java<\/code>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n- Compile the Code<\/strong>: Open Command Prompt (cmd.exe), navigate to the directory where you saved your file, and type
javac WelcomeApp.java<\/code>: C:\\Users\\YourName>javac WelcomeApp.java<\/code> This will compile your code. If there are no errors in the code, the command prompt will take you to the next line.<\/li>\n\n\n\n- Run the Code<\/strong>: Now, type
java WelcomeApp<\/code> to run the file: C:\\Users\\YourName>java WelcomeApp<\/code> The output should read: Hello, Java Universe!<\/code><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\nExample Explained<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n- Class Declaration<\/strong>: Every line of code in Java must be inside a class. The class name should always start with an uppercase first letter. In our example, we named the class
WelcomeApp<\/code>. Note:<\/strong> Java is case-sensitive: “MyClass” and “myclass” have different meanings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n- File Name and Class Name<\/strong>: The name of the Java file must match the class name. When saving the file, save it using the class name and add “.java” to the end of the filename.<\/li>\n\n\n\n

main<\/code> Method<\/strong>: The main()<\/code> method is required and you will see it in every Java program: public static void main(String[] args)<\/code> Any code inside the main()<\/code> method will be executed. This is where the program begins execution.<\/li>\n\n\n\nSystem.out.println()<\/code><\/strong>: Inside the main()<\/code> method, we use the println()<\/code> method to print a line of text to the screen: public static void main(String[] args) { System.out.println(\"Hello, Java Universe!\"); }<\/code> System<\/code> is a built-in Java class that contains useful members, such as out<\/code>, which is short for “output”. The println()<\/code> method, short for “print line”, is used to print a value to the screen (or a file).
