The git archive<\/code> command allows you to combine multiple files into a single file, much like a zip utility. This means you can create an archive of your files, which can later be extracted to get individual files.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initial Example<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To create a zip archive of the current revision:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

$ git archive --format zip HEAD > archive-HEAD.zip<\/pre><\/div>\n\n\n\n

This command will create a zip archive named archive-HEAD.zip<\/code> containing the files from the current revision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ARCHIVE Options<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Option<\/th>Description<\/th><\/tr><\/thead>
--format=<fmt><\/code><\/td>Specifies the format of the resulting archive. Possible values are tar<\/code>, zip<\/code>, tar.gz<\/code>, tgz<\/code>, and any custom format defined using the configuration option tar.<format>.command<\/code>. If --format<\/code> is not given and the output file is specified, the format is inferred from the filename (e.g., writing to foo.zip<\/code> sets the format to zip<\/code>). The default format is tar<\/code>.<\/td><\/tr>
-l<\/code>, --list<\/code><\/td>Shows all available formats.<\/td><\/tr>
-v<\/code>, --verbose<\/code><\/td>Reports progress to stderr<\/code>.<\/td><\/tr>
--prefix=<prefix>\/<\/code><\/td>Prepends the specified prefix to paths in the archive. The rightmost value is used for all tracked files.<\/td><\/tr>
-o <file><\/code>, --output=<file><\/code><\/td>Writes the archive to the specified file instead of stdout<\/code>.<\/td><\/tr>
--add-file=<file><\/code><\/td>Adds a non-tracked file to the archive. Can be repeated to add multiple files. The path in the archive is built by concatenating the value of the last --prefix<\/code> option (if any) and the basename of the file.<\/td><\/tr>
--add-virtual-file=<path>:<content><\/code><\/td>Adds the specified contents to the archive. Can be repeated to add multiple files. The path can be a C-style string with escape characters. This option creates a regular file with the specified path and content. Unlike --add-file<\/code>, the path is not affected by the --prefix<\/code> option.<\/td><\/tr>
--worktree-attributes<\/code><\/td>Looks for attributes in .gitattributes<\/code> files in the working tree as well.<\/td><\/tr>
--mtime=<time><\/code><\/td>Sets the modification time of archive entries. Without this option, the committer time is used if the input is a commit or tag, and the current time if it is a tree.<\/td><\/tr>
<extra><\/code><\/td>Specifies any additional options that the archiver backend understands.<\/td><\/tr>
--remote=<repo><\/code><\/td>Retrieves a tar archive from a remote repository instead of the local repository. The remote repository may place restrictions on which sha1 expressions are allowed.<\/td><\/tr>
--exec=<git-upload-archive><\/code><\/td>Used with --remote<\/code> to specify the path to git-upload-archive<\/code> on the remote side.<\/td><\/tr>
<tree-ish><\/code><\/td>Specifies the tree or commit to produce an archive for.<\/td><\/tr>
<path><\/code><\/td>If no path is specified, all files and subdirectories of the current working directory are included in the archive. If one or more paths are specified, only those are included.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

1. Create a Tar Archive<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
To create a tar archive of the current revision:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
$ git archive --format tar HEAD > archive-HEAD.tar<\/pre><\/div>\n\n\n\n
<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This will create a tar archive named archive-HEAD.tar<\/code>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
2. Create an Archive of a Specific Branch<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
To create a zip archive of a specific branch, say develop<\/code>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
$ git archive --format zip develop > develop-archive.zip<\/pre><\/div>\n\n\n\n
<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This will create a zip archive named develop-archive.zip<\/code> containing the files from the develop<\/code> branch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
3. Create an Archive with a Path Prefix<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
You can add a prefix to the files in the archive using the --prefix<\/code> option. For example, to add a prefix project\/<\/code> to the files in the archive:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
$ git archive --format zip --prefix=project\/ HEAD > project-archive.zip<\/pre><\/div>\n\n\n\n
<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This will create a zip archive named project-archive.zip<\/code>, and all files in the archive will have the project\/<\/code> prefix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
