The git cherry-pick<\/code> command lets you pick a specific commit from one branch and apply it to another branch. It\u2019s handy when you need to move individual changes without merging entire branches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

$ git cherry-pick <commit-hash><\/pre><\/div>\n\n\n\n

CHERRY-PICK Options<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Option<\/th>Description<\/th><\/tr><\/thead>
<commit>\u2026\u200b<\/code><\/td>Specifies the commits to cherry-pick. No traversal is done by default, behaving as if the --no-walk<\/code> option was specified. Note that specifying a range will feed all <commit>\u2026\u200b<\/code> arguments to a single revision walk.<\/td><\/tr>
-e<\/code>, --edit<\/code><\/td>Allows you to edit the commit message before committing.<\/td><\/tr>
--cleanup=<mode><\/code><\/td>Determines how the commit message will be cleaned up before being passed to the commit machinery. For example, using scissors<\/code> appends scissors to MERGE_MSG<\/code> in case of a conflict.<\/td><\/tr>
-x<\/code><\/td>Adds a line to the commit message indicating which commit this change was cherry-picked from, useful for publicly visible branches.<\/td><\/tr>
-r<\/code><\/td>Previously disabled the default -x<\/code> behavior, now it is a no-op as -x<\/code> is not the default.<\/td><\/tr>
-m <parent-number><\/code>, --mainline <parent-number><\/code><\/td>Specifies the parent number of the mainline to replay the change relative to the specified parent, useful for cherry-picking a merge.<\/td><\/tr>
-n<\/code>, --no-commit<\/code><\/td>Applies changes to the working tree and index without making any commits. Useful for applying multiple commits in sequence.<\/td><\/tr>
-s<\/code>, --signoff<\/code><\/td>Adds a Signed-off-by trailer at the end of the commit message.<\/td><\/tr>
-S[<keyid>]<\/code>, --gpg-sign[=<keyid>]<\/code>, --no-gpg-sign<\/code><\/td>GPG-signs commits. If <keyid><\/code> is specified, it defaults to the committer identity. --no-gpg-sign<\/code> counteracts any prior --gpg-sign<\/code> or the commit.gpgSign<\/code> configuration.<\/td><\/tr>
--ff<\/code><\/td>Performs a fast forward if the current HEAD is the parent of the cherry-picked commit.<\/td><\/tr>
--allow-empty<\/code><\/td>Allows empty commits to be preserved automatically in a cherry-pick, useful for initially empty commits.<\/td><\/tr>
--allow-empty-message<\/code><\/td>Allows cherry-picking commits with empty messages.<\/td><\/tr>
--empty=(drop|keep|stop)<\/code><\/td>Specifies how to handle redundant commits: drop<\/code> removes the commit, keep<\/code> preserves it, and stop<\/code> stops the cherry-pick for review. The default is stop<\/code>.<\/td><\/tr>
--keep-redundant-commits<\/code><\/td>Deprecated synonym for --empty=keep<\/code>.<\/td><\/tr>
--strategy=<strategy><\/code><\/td>Uses the given merge strategy, specified only once.<\/td><\/tr>
-X<option><\/code>, --strategy-option=<option><\/code><\/td>Passes the merge strategy-specific option to the merge strategy.<\/td><\/tr>
--rerere-autoupdate<\/code>, --no-rerere-autoupdate<\/code><\/td>Controls whether the rerere<\/code> mechanism updates the index after resolving conflicts. --no-rerere-autoupdate<\/code> is useful for reviewing resolutions before committing.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Examples<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
1. Simple Example<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
Suppose you have a feature-branch<\/code> and you want to apply a specific commit from this branch to main-branch<\/code>. Here\u2019s how:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Switch to main-branch<\/code>:<\/strong> $ git checkout main-branch<\/code><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Cherry-pick the commit:<\/strong> $ git cherry-pick <commit-hash><\/code><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
    Just replace <commit-hash><\/code> with the actual hash of the commit you want to apply. This will copy the commit from feature-branch<\/code> to main-branch<\/code>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
    2. Cherry-Pick Multiple Commits<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
    If you need to apply multiple commits, you can specify each commit hash like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
    $ git cherry-pick <commit-hash1> <commit-hash2> <commit-hash3><\/pre><\/div>\n\n\n\n
    This will copy the specified commits to the current branch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
    3. Cherry-Pick a Range of Commits<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
    You can also copy a range of commits using this syntax:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
    $ git cherry-pick <start-commit-hash>..<end-commit-hash><\/pre><\/div>\n\n\n\n
