The git init<\/code> command is used to create a new, empty Git repository. This is the first step in tracking your project’s changes with Git.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To initialize a new Git repository in your current directory, simply type:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-q, --quiet<\/code><\/td>Suppress all output except for error and warning messages.<\/td><\/tr>
--bare<\/code><\/td>Create a bare repository with no working directory. Useful for a central repository.<\/td><\/tr>
--object-format=<format><\/code><\/td>Specify the object format (hash algorithm) for the repository, such as sha1<\/code> or sha256<\/code>.<\/td><\/tr>
--ref-format=<format><\/code><\/td>Set the ref storage format for the repository. Valid options are files<\/code> (default) and reftable<\/code> (experimental).<\/td><\/tr>
--template=<template-directory><\/code><\/td>Use the specified directory as a template for the repository.<\/td><\/tr>
--separate-git-dir=<git-dir><\/code><\/td>Create a text file pointing to the actual repository location, useful for managing repository location separately.<\/td><\/tr>
-b <branch-name>, --initial-branch<\/code><\/td>Set the initial branch name for the newly created repository. If not specified, the default branch name is used.<\/td><\/tr>
--shared[=(false|true|umask|group|all|world|everybody|<perm>)]<\/code><\/td>Configure the repository to be shared among users with specified permissions, such as group<\/code>, all<\/code>, or custom permissions in octal format (e.g., 0640<\/code>).<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

When you run the command in your project directory, Git will create a new subdirectory named .git<\/code> that contains all the necessary repository files. This is the basic structure of a Git repository.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
